Bourbon- era theater featured specific gendered tactics to educate audiences, particularly in its attempt to model proper behavior for women.

Chapter 3, “Camposcape: Naturalizing Nudity,” examines how the visual arts were instrumental in furthering an exoticism that could be used to measure and fix metropolitan identities against (largely imagined) rural ones.
