To answer this and other questions relating to European integration and economic convergence we need to analyse the literature on regional disparities and centre-periphery relations, which have in the past informed the views of economists and political scientists in evaluating the dynamics of European economic integration, the evolution of disparities within the context of nation-states and the position of peripheral states within wider political unions.
