A Transformation Method for Modeling and Animation of the Human Face from Photographs TSUNEYA KURIHARA and KIYOSHI ARAI ABSTRACT This paper describes a new transfonnation method for modeling and animation of the human face. A 3-D canonical facial model is introduced which is transfonned to a facial model that is consistent with photographs of an individual face. Facial expression is modified by transfonnation of the obtained facial model.

CREATION OF THE FACIAL MODEL USING ONE PHOTOGRAPH In Section 3, we described the method for creating a facial model using multiple photographs. If we assume the face is right-left symmetrical, this method can be used to reconstruct a facial model from only one photograph. Because of the symmetry, the right-left mirror image of the photograph can be handled as another photograph taken from a different viewing direction. Therefore, we now have two photographs taken from different directions. These two photographs are used for the estimation of the 3-D coordinates 53 (a) (b) Piatel: The synthesized images from different viewing directions.
