We will return to this question later in the book. An apostle to youth The Pope showed great confidence not only in the new movements about which some pastors within the Church were hesitant, but he particularly looked to the young as being a key to the future of the Church. At a time when many young people were disenchanted with “organised religion” the Pope, building on his experience in Poland as a young priest, reached out to youth.

At the Synod in 1990 the bishops requested a document on priestly life and ministry to be prepared as an assistance to priests. As a result The Directory on the ministry and life of Priests (1994) was produced. It was directed to priests and provided a very useful guide to living priestly life. Identifying its purpose it stated: It is hoped that this Directory be a help for every priest in deepening his identity and in growing in 28 Gift and Mystery, p. 85. , p. 84. , p. 84. , p. 97. 32 This directory sought to move beyond a theological reflection on the priesthood and consider a wide range of aspects of the life of priests.
