The phrases suggested via Serge Kreiter in the course of the assembly spring to mind. they can checklist precisely the state of affairs of Acarology in Europe and on this planet: "I imagine that during many eu international locations there are only a few complete time acarologists. it's very infrequent to have new positions on hand . . . . And public funds, from the ecu group but in addition from nationwide international locations, is particularly demanding to get if you happen to are looking to paintings on mites . . . . might acarological institutions in Europe (Eur. A. Ac. and S. I. A. L. F) interact or, greater, get married?" So, the fourth symposium of the eu Acarologists has not just been the celebration to have an idea on which path the study is addressed at the present time, but additionally it mentioned the problems of our "scientific hranch". at the foundation of the displays and invited papers we had evidences of a "new" Acarology in response to glossy ideas and strategies of investigations but in addition the significance, usually sheltered no matter if of suitable price, of the "old" Acarology made at the alpha taxonomy and simple stories. So, a "new" Acarology wishes the "old" one. during this context, the desire to place jointly the eu acarologists has been arising. This truth, of political which means, can without doubt increase the acarological circulation and the dialogue in this element confirmed truly the significance of a number of different actions and efforts during this path. we are hoping that the assembly in Siena will signify a significative stone for the development of Acarology.

We have confirmed this suggestion by showing that the mite homolog of zen is expressed like a typical Hox gene (Telford and Thomas 1998b). This result has also been confirmed in a spider (Damen and Tautz 1998). The question now is to find out where in arthropod evolution the change in function of this Hox gene occurred. The ability to prepare large numbers of embryos without tedious or very difficult dissections should allow the examination of early development in many more mite taxa with relatively little effort.

These studies provide an important context to guide future work on the mechanisms underlying pseudo-arrhenotoky. The variety of genetic systems found in mites and their apparent multiple evolutionary origins are not encountered in other taxa and as such mites provide us with unparalleled opportunities to understand the evolution of these genetic systems. We have made a small start on this with our study of the Dermanyssina (Mesostigmata) (Cruickshank and Thomas 1999), an immense group that contains members with diplodiploid, pseudo-arrhenotokous and arrhenotokous genetic systems.
