Border issues. The United States insists in going it alone, with an expensive border apparatus, and a law enforcement approach that has not paid off. This is the path of empire, attempting to secure its outer perimeters at an increasingly higher cost. History has shown that this path is doomed. Consequently, in the process of analyzing what it is like to live and work and study and move about on the frontlines of these border wars, I also want to expose the absurdity of dealing with the border unilaterally.

A drug cartel is willing to pay anywhere between $10,000 and $20,000 to that same agent for allowing a “clavo” to come across by waving it through the POE inspection point. S. official to become corrupt. One is greed, of course, but blood ties also matter. Many officials are tempted by their own relatives across the border.

S. highways to the major metropolitan areas throughout the country. What makes this possible is revealed in a simple mathematical reflection. Of the 5 million trucks that cross the border, only a fraction of them is inspected. It would be extremely costly and time-consuming to run a thorough inspection of every truck. Technology is helping to catch more of the hidden drugs: the infrared and X-ray scanners similar to a car wash sprayer that trucks now go through are helping considerably, but still only a fraction are detected.
