During her undergraduate days at Indiana University, she was employed by an accountant during the school year and spent four “glorious” summers as a camp counselor at a private girls’ camp on Lake Thompson in Oxford, Maine.
She won them both. It did not occur to her at the time that winning the Met auditions was unlikely after taking singing lessons for only five years. But the improbable happened. Also in 1982, McNair debuted at the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in New York City, performing in a Haydn opera.
